The Faded Dreamland

In the 1990s, my hometown Hainan Island had China’s first big property bubble. Many buildings were left unfinished, and the dream of an international tourism island turned into a cycle of building and abandonment.

At the same time, China’s largest wave of state enterprise layoffs in history forced many in the Northeast to move south. They became the main buyers of Hainan’s seaside properties—both dreamers of utopia and inheritors of the bubble.

I grew up among these landscapes. My father worked on the disposal of unfinished projects, and deserted resorts marked the backdrop of my childhood.

This project reimagines abandoned coastlines in a virtual environment, told through the eyes of Northeastern buyers, to reveal how fantasies of paradise are constructed, sold, and endlessly rebuilt on ruins.
